How to get started with your training
So many people make the mistake of rewarding their dog with the treat when they have not done exactly what you’ve asked your dog to do. Do you want the dog to sit on the first time or the fifth? If you tell him five times and then reward him that is what you are teaching. This is why people fail when using food as a benefit to training. I still use food with all my dogs whenever I am working on a new training exercise. Then I move on to working with a ball, or puppy tug, once I see that my dog has picked up on the new training exercise. One thing you may find out that some dogs are more interested in food more that others. And that’s find just use both if you like.
Often I see this happen when you do not start training off with a puppy at young age. Most everyone that I have help train their dogs and puppies, to retrieve a toy always seem to think that their dog does not like toy training because their dog will not fetch it.
But that is not always true. Most of the time the dog just did not pick up on what you are trying to teach him yet, so you just need to make it fun and practice everyday. Just a few minutes, two times a day is all it takes. Think about when you take your dog out to go potty, and after he has done hes business use a ball for rewarding him. You will see how fast they will learn. Remember consistency is the key to success when training dogs and puppies.
