How to train a four-month-old German Shepherd Puppy.
Today’s training with Nora we are teaching a focused heel using a long-line. In our last video, we taught it using a six-foot leash. We are working on and getting her ready for off-leash control. So you may be wondering why would you use a long line? That’s a great question?
You are seeing Shannon working with Nora and we are using the 15-foot cotton web long line and we’re working on a focused heel for off-leash control and teaching new skills to our puppy. Why are we doing this?
We always want to teach a puppy how to advance from using a 6-foot least to of 15-foot cotton web long lines to build control from a distance so when she is off-leash she will respond correctly to our commands. We also need our dog not want to break away from us in the heel position when training for off-leash.
When you first get started doing this you always want to take stage one, which is the basic level to long line work, when you go out to practice. If you are teaching the dog to heel on the left side you always want the line dragging on the left side behind you to avoid the line from wrapping around your legs and causing a leg burn. If you’re new to this, I always recommend a cotton web, recommend not use a nylon long-line. Nylon burns and we don’t want it burning your dog legs and yours too.
Best practice for safety and Handling Tips:
When you first start learning how to use a long-line for training you don’t want to practice it around people so your dog does not break away from you. We do not want the line wrapping around people that may be watching. Always use an Open Fields give yourself plenty of room whether it’s in your backyard, at a private field, or park and remember this is the first level of conditioning for you and your dog.
As you watch the video, you will see Shannon training her puppy, You’ll hear me telling her what to look for and what she need to watch for when she is out training. I am telling her what to do. I am actually correcting the mistakes that she’s making so you guys can learn too.
If you miss Nora’s first video you can check out here: In our last video, we taught it using a six-foot leash.
I would highly recommend Long Pants and closed Shoes: Please don’t wear shorts or sandals – rope burns to not discriminate.
